The PANRAMA System

As the first dome projection system ever to use a single film, PANRAMA was patented in 1958 by Philippe JAULMES, architect in Montpellier, France. PANRAMA completely embraces the spectators and takes them inside the image which is no longer within a frame: it is limitless. Immerged in the image, the eye is now free and the whole surface of the retina is stimulated, as close as possible to real visual perception. Consequently, the viewer gets an incomparable feeling of space and depth.

On the PANRAMA screen, almost 180°, the spectator’s eye discovers a new universe, as it does in real life, to find its place in its surroundings. This is what makes the PANRAMA system such an important tool in visual simulation and creation, and why it is used by professionals and for research, as well as for general audiences. The purpose of this demonstration is to show the qualities of the system in a small dimension configuration: realistic fictional imagery, documentary film, abstract imagery, experimental film, and experiences in Stereoscopic 3D.

The PANRAMA effect

The PANRAMA effect is to rediscover the famous “reality effect” in cinema projection. At a time when electronic imagery aims at going further with Stereoscopy and the new concept of “augmented reality”, immersing the viewer in PANRAMA’S unique spherical image remains extraordinarily innovative and impressive. It reminds us that the feeling of depth is essentially connected with movement in space, that is the perception of lateral and frontal speed which is only experienced through dome projection.

Specifications of the installation:

- An inclined dome screen (4 meters in diameter) seating 12 to 16 spectators.
- An ultra-high definition videoprojector at the center of the half-sphere.
- A PANRAMA-REOSC fish-eye lens (12.7 mm), custom-designed and built for the PANRAMA system, used as the camera lens as well as for projection.
