Peter Weibel

Curriculum Vitae

Peter Weibel was born 1944 in Odessa, Ukraine. Weibel studied literature, medicine, logic, philosophy and film in Paris and Vienna. Due to his versatile activities he became a central figure of european media art. Since 1984, he holds a Professor chair at University of applied Arts Vienna. He was a Professor for video and Digital Art at Center for Media Studies at State University of New York, Buffalo from 1984 to 1989. In 1989, he founded the institute for new Media at Städelschule Frankfurt (Germany), that he lead until 1995.

He was the artistic curator of Ars Electronica in Linz from 1986 to 1995, next to his work as Austrias inspector in Biennale Venice, Italy, from 1993 to1999. Furthermore, Weibel was the chief curator of New Gallery Graz from 1993 to 1998, and since 1999, he is in the board committee of ZKM|Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe.

In 2002 he recieved the „Grand Decoration of Honour for services to the Republic of Austria”. In 2007 he has been awarded with the honorary doctorate of University of Art and Design Helsinki, and in 2008 he recieved the french grand decoration of honour "Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" and was the artistic head of Sevilla Biennale (Biacs3).

In2009 P.Weibel reveived the "Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge-Preis for unvonventional Communication of Art" of Foundation "Preußische Seehandlung", the medal of Merit of county of Baden-Wuerttemberg as well as "European Culture-Projectprice" of European Culture Foundation. In addition, Peter Weibel was elected as a regular member of Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts Munich in 2009.

Since 2011, he is the artistic director of 4th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art. Also from 2009 to 2012, he works as a guest professor at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. In 2010 he was honoured with the "Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art”.
