Curriculum Vitae

Dipl. oec. Christoph Backes started his career as an actor and assistant director at the „Bremer Theater”. He worked as a manager for the „Junges Theater Bremen” which he co-founded before he studied economics with a focus on start-ups, developments in management and organizations as well as economic advisory services for politics. After that he managed the marketing department at the first „RuhrTriennale” under the directorship of Dr. Gérard Mortier and built up the „GründerZentrum Kulturwirtschaft” in Aachen and the „u-institut” in Bremen, which for instance runs the coaching programs „IDEENLOTSEN-Business as Unusual” and “Kreativmacher Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” for creatives.

Christoph Backes advises freelancers of the creative industries and is doing business himself since he was in the school. Since 2005 he designs and maintains infrastructures for financial aids for creative talents all over Germany. Since 2009 he also works for the initiative „Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft“ (Culture and Creative Industries) of the German federal government, for instance he accompanies the states´ competence center for creative industries. Since 2010 he manages the award „Kultur- und Kreativpilot Deutschland“ (culture and creative pilot) which he also designed.

Christoph Backes teaches Cultural Institutions Studies at the „Hochschule Bremen" and the „Universität Basel". Furthermore he is the author of several studies concerning cultural and creative industries and has written numerous articles in journals.

Since 2010 Christoph Backes is the director of the „Bremer u-institut für unternehmerisches Denken und Handeln e.V." (Institute for Thinking and Acting in a Business-like Manner) (www.u-insitute.de) at the „Hochschule Bremen". He is a member of the working group for cultural statistics and economic deputies of the city-state parliament of Bremen.
